Well it seemed like yet another tale of plucky British failure when, back in 1997, the British 4x400m relay team came a close second to the US in the World Championships.
But now Roger Black, Jamie Baulch, Iwan Thomas and Mark Richardson are handing back their silver medals – so they can have gold instead, or at least so they thought!
The quartet were yesterday declared the race winners after one of the US team, Antonio Pettigrew, admitted using drugs, However Jamie Baulch joined Jay Curtis on Bay Radio Breakfast today to explain that none of them have infact heard anything from the International Association of Athletics Federation.
The British team, who also lost to the US team the year before in the Atlanta Olympics, had been campaigning for their gold medals ever since Pettigrew sensationally confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs in court in November 2008.
Despite reports in the media that a ceremony to present the former track and field heroes with their new medals is being organised, this was denined by Jamie who told Jay:
" We havent even heard anything, myself, Roger,Iwan and Mark have had no contact. Infact nothing has been said or done, However my dad wrote to them last year as he was curious and we still havent heard nothing"
However the UKA has now confirmed that it has the medals and will discuss the matter at a board meeting this month.
